Master of the World

| Just watched the movie on TCM. I watched it because I am a fan of Vincent Price, but the actor who kept me interested was the man at the ship's wheel. Is that Richard Harrison? His strong and muscular physique was one of the most exciting pieces of scenery in the movie. Once in awhile I saw his handsome profile. He was one hunk of a man in his day.... |

The Keep

|
| This early effort from Michael Mann is flawed in many ways. It seems like it was rushed into release, with choppy editing and an annoying score by Tangerine Dream. I read the book a while back, then saw the film when it first came out. With the advent of DVDs, I sold my VHS; haven't seen it in years. Still, there are brilliant images that have remained in my memory, and I would buy the DVD in a minute. A commentary from Mr. Mann, who has since become immensely respected, would be welcome. The film is, indeed, faithful to the book (well, as much as most films are) and retains the requisite suspense. Scott Glenn is a good actor, but he's not my idea of romantic leading man material. Jurgen Prochnow is a sufficiently bad Nazi, and good beats evil. How it happens is what's interesting, and I'm pining for a DVD. Anyone else agree? |

The Uninvited
|
|
| This movie is not as well known as other ghost stories, but, as a lifelong lover of the genre, I believe it is one of the finest: subtle, surprising, believable and extremely well-acted. Unlike modern "horror" movies that leave nothing at all too the imagination and rely more on battering the viewer into submission with violence and gore, "The Uninvited" draws you into the story, involving you in the characters' lives so that, by the time the eerie things start happening, you too are part of the story. Well written, well acted, and worth the watch. I'm going to get the DVD as soon as Amazon tells me it's available. |

| This film is every bit as wonderful as I remember it being from when I saw it as a child. I only wish that it had been available in DVD format. (I worry that the tape will break soon because of its age. |

The Dark Secret of Harvest Home

| I'll never forget seeing this movie 30 years ago when it first aired on TV. I was only 11 then but I never forgot it! It is not very well known but it is very creepy in a subtle, slow, underhanded sort of way, which I think is the best form of horror! There is one scene in this movie I can remember seeing back when it first aired that creeped me out in a big way and still does for some odd reason - the main character, Nick, is standing out on his back porch late at night and he THINKS he sees this image of a couple dancing in a nearby cornfield. It is a fertility dance of some sort but there was just something about that scene that was really creepy. I think it's because you're not sure whether or not he is really seeing this or if he's just imagining it all. That in itself is an eerie concept. Watch this movie and it'll surely make you wary of spending time in small, out of the way towns! |
